Now the question is, how many diapers do you need?  Newborns require anywhere from 8 to 12 changes in a 24-hour period so depending on how often you wash, you may want to have anywhere from 24 to 36 diapers on hand.  Once baby grows and eating patterns change at around 5 to 6 months of age, you may need only 20 to 24 diapers. 

For twins and other multiples at birth, you may want to add approximately 12 to 24 extra diapers per additional child.

More diapers on hand at one time means fewer loads of laundry but you can use these guidelines to assist you in deciding what will be right for you.  Our experience suggests that 20 to 24 diapers on hand for one child will work fine with a laundering pattern of washing every other day.
